In partnership with the NSW Government, Transit Systems NSW innovates, designs and delivers public transport solutions that attract passengers because they are easy to use, reliable, convenient and safe. Our goal is to connect people and link communities.

With 11 depots, located in Bankstown, Bradbury, Burwood, Hoxton Park, Kingsgrove, Leichhardt, Macquarie Fields, Smeaton Grange, Smithfield, South Granville, and Tempe, Transit Systems NSW employs around 2,400 staff, operating a fleet of more than 1,200 buses. Our workforce includes both trainee and experienced bus drivers, mechanical and body repair technicians, and a team of highly qualified specialist support staff including schedulers and network planners, customer information and communications specialists, health and safety professionals, financial management advisors and an experienced operational management and support team.

Transit Systems operates a diverse fleet, comprised of diesel, compressed natural gas and battery electric powered vehicles. What it’s like to work for Transit Systems NSW

FAQs

  • If the regular nine-to-five working life isn’t for you, our full-time driving positions work on a rotating roster, and provide the option to boost your pay through voluntary weekend shifts and additional charter work.

Your roster may include a mixture of morning, afternoon, evening, or broken shifts, working five days, with voluntary overtime available on Saturdays and Sundays.

A broken shift means you will do some hours in the morning, then have a 3–5-hour break, before completing the remainder of your shift in the afternoon. This shift covers our busy AM and PM peak periods. Evening, or PM shifts, cover the overnight period and can finish as late as 3.30am in the morning.

We offer voluntary overtime on weekends, as well as regular charter opportunities to cover rail replacement services or for special events. You can determine how much you earn, so long as your working hours do not breach industry fatigue regulations.

  • Weekend work is optional which means it is paid at the appropriate overtime rates.

  • The current base rate of pay is $28.71 per hour plus $16.50 per day for conductor’s allowance. You may also be eligible for a high-capacity allowance if you drive an articulated or double-decker bus, plus any penalties accrued through voluntary overtime or public holiday work.

  • As a trainee bus driver, you will:

    • Participate in a nationally recognised Certificate of Road Transport and Logistics (2 years).
    • Be fully upgraded for a MR or HR licence.
    • Have assistance gaining a Driver Authority Card, required for operating a public passenger vehicle.
    • Have additional roster options such as charter work (AM and PM shifts).
    • Have secure employment with a diverse, Australian company.
    • Have access to other career opportunities within the business.

  • While there are opportunities for you to boost your pay through weekend voluntary overtime and charter work, we don’t allow you to work more than 6 days a week to help manage fatigue and ensure a work/life balance. We do cater for cultural needs I.e., prayer time or church responsibilities, however, to help us manage rostering requirements, we do require a months’ notice for annual leave.

  • We provide 3 days of classroom-based training as well as 7-days of on-road training. You will be provided feedback daily on how you are going regarding driving skills. All training is fully paid as part of your bus driver traineeship.

  • While we offer additional ‘buddy’ or ‘mentor’ support if required, there may come a time when we must accept that even with more training, being a bus driver may not be the career for you. As stated above, we will provide you feedback daily so you will know if you are doing well and where you need to improve.
